Serving Hawaii
Our office is located in Honolulu. Our organization includes Maui Oil Company, Lanai Oil Company, Big Island Energy Company and GP Energy Company.

Our logo is on everything we do. It embodies the roots of our company.

The design was guided by author Gill McBarnet, wife of company co-owner Terry McBarnet, as she reflected on the values that inspired Alex and Mary Jane McBarnet to launch our family business in the 1980s.
WAVES
The waves represent the family’s love and respect for the water that surrounds our island home.
WINGS
For our founder, Alex McBarnet, flight was lifelong passion. From his days as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II, to his time as a private pilot on Maui, he held a deep love for soaring with the birds. The ae‘o, or Hawaiian stilt, is a frequent visitor of the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary adjacent to our company’s home office, and the majestic silhouette of the bird in flight seemed an appropriate image to represent the company.
DREAMS
The stars remind us to be passionate about life and our personal aspirations, and to reach for the stars in all that we do.
We started as a family
and we kept it that way.
Big Island Energy is the only local, family owned petroleum company on island.

A Life of Vision, Service, and Determination
The story of our parent company - Maui Oil - begins with Alex J.W. McBarnet, Sr., whose life was defined by discipline, courage, and an unwavering sense of purpose. Born in 1917 in what is now Zimbabwe, Alex’s path took him from the skies of World War II where he served as a Royal Air Force pilot to a successful career in the oil industry with Shell in India. It was there he met Mary Jane Tuttle, a Punahou School and UC Berkeley graduate, fellow aviation enthusiast, and community-minded leader. Their shared passion for adventure, service, and hard work would become the foundation for both their life together and the company they would one day build.

Building a Legacy on Maui
After settling on Maui in 1954, Alex and Mary Jane became deeply woven into the fabric of the island by supporting local schools, championing community initiatives, and raising a family grounded in the values of integrity and responsibility. When Alex retired from the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company in 1981, they saw an opportunity to start something lasting. In 1982, Maui Oil Company was born in Kahului with just six employees, three trucks, and a clear mission: to serve the people and businesses of Hawaii with honesty, reliability, and respect.

Guided by Core Values
Alex’s leadership style (shaped by his military service, corporate experience, and belief in doing right by people) created a culture where safety, quality, and accountability came first. Mary Jane’s focus on relationships and community ensured the company’s growth never came at the expense of its local roots. Together, they built a business where every customer interaction mattered, and every employee was part of the extended Maui Oil ‘ohana.

From One Island to All of Hawaii
Under the McBarnet family’s leadership, Maui Oil expanded steadily by acquiring other local companies, introducing eco-friendly innovations like Maui Express Car Wash, and building a presence across Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Hawaii Island, Kauai, and Oahu. Today, Alex and Mary Jane’s legacy lives on in the second generation of family leadership, over 120 dedicated employees, and a reputation as Hawaii’s largest independent petroleum marketer - still proudly local, still family-owned, and still guided by the values of its founders.
